Founded with a passion for second-hand vintage clothing and a commitment to environmental sustainability, The Recycling Shop is more than just a fashion brand; it's a movement towards a greener, more compassionate future.
Our founder, Jinee Amyss discovered her love for vintage fashion and the importance of recycling clothes in 2010. Inspired by the idea of reducing waste and embracing unique styles, she began curating her own collection of vintage pieces and recycling clothes she and her sister no longer wore.
As Jinee delved deeper into the world of sustainable fashion, she recognised the opportunity to make a positive impact beyond just the environment.
With a desire to give back to communities in need, The Recycling Shop’s promise is that for every purchase made, 10% goes directly towards providing meals for orphans and families in India and Mauritius, addressing the pressing issue of hunger in these regions highlighted by the Global Hunger Index.
Driven by her Christian faith and inspired by Jesus' teachings on caring for the vulnerable, Jinee is committed to providing food for children through The Recycling Shop's Food Kitchen initiative. As Acts 20:35 reminds us, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."
The journey of The Recycling Shop began in 2013 when Jinee rented a space at Kingston Post Office to sell her own second-hand clothing, along with pieces from her sister's wardrobe. What started as a simple endeavour to clear out their closets quickly evolved into a thriving business rooted in principles of sustainability and philanthropy.
Driven by a desire to educate young people and local students about the importance of recycling clothes, Jinee's vision is to see a more sustainable future for the clothing we wear, to see the hungry fed and for children to live the fullest life possible.
In addition to her passion for sustainability, Jinee faced personal challenges when her daughter was diagnosed with a medical condition that required extensive medical care. Struggling to cover the mounting expenses, she turned to her love for fashion and entrepreneurship to generate additional income. The Recycling Shop was born and fueled by a mother's love and determination to provide for her family while making a positive impact on the world.
